Byron Bay is the 10th council to vote for a Fossil Ad Ban
We have ended the year on a high, with Byron Shire Council becoming the 10th council to vote for a Fossil Ad Ban. The NSW north coast town has also taken an extra step, agreeing to write to local events and organisations, asking them to take a similar action against big polluters.
Byron Bay is a major hub for festivals and events.
The Notice of Motion that was approved, requested the General Manager add ‘fossil fuels’ to the products that are banned from entering into sponsorship agreements with the council.
The sponsorship policy will now be put on public exhibition saying:
‘The following companies, partnerships, sole traders or individuals are not suitable sponsors in Byron Shire, those:
- involved in the manufacture, distribution and wholesaling of tobacco related products, involved in the extraction and sale of coal, petroleum and gas, pornography and/or addictive drugs’
Thank you to the Byron Bay Mayor, Councillor Asren Pugh and everyone in Byron who cares about our health and planet.
