South Australia may soon be prevented from state-funded sportswashing, thanks to a Bill by Greens MLA Tammy Franks.
The Public Finance and Audit (Fossil Fuel Sponsorships) Amendment Bill prevents the government from funding any events which promote coal, oil and gas. This includes any event which has a fossil fuel sponsor.

The Bill would stop the SA government from supporting the Tour Down Under, one of Australia’s largest cycling events, unless its current sponsor, Santos, is dropped.
It comes as the SA government makes a bid to host the UN climate talks, COP31, in 2026. The UNFCCC, which runs COP, does not allow fossil fuel sponsors.
