It’s time to ban fossil fuel advertising in Aotearoa.

For decades, fossil fuel companies have systematically misled the public about their role in driving the climate crisis. Despite overwhelming scientific evidence, these companies continue to use advertising, sponsorships, and public relations campaigns to delay meaningful action on climate change.

And it’s happening right here in Aotearoa.

Take Z Energy, for example.

They’re under fire for allegedly using deceptive marketing tactics to appear environmentally responsible while their total polluting emissions keep rising.

Consumer NZ, alongside the Environmental Law Initiative and Lawyers for Climate Action NZ, is taking the petrol giant to the High Court. They claim Z Energy’s slogans like “we’re in the business of getting out of the petrol business” mislead the public about their true environmental impact.

It’s time for Aotearoa to join the global movement and ban fossil fuel advertising for our health, our climate, and our future.

Take action

Tēnā koutou,

As a concerned New Zealander, I’m urging you to take bold action to protect our environment, our health, and the future of our tamariki by banning fossil fuel advertising and sponsorships in Aotearoa.

As we face more floods, droughts and extreme weather, we need urgent action. Just like we regulate ads for tobacco and alcohol, it’s time to do the same for fossil fuels.

Other countries are already taking this seriously. France has introduced a national ban on fossil fuel ads. Cities in the UK and Netherlands are also leading the way.

Please support the Fossil Ad Ban campaign. Let’s stand on the right side of history and protect the people and places we love.

Ngā mihi nui,

The fossil fuel industry is the new tobacco

Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are the major drivers of climate change. This crisis threatens not only our planet but also our health and wellbeing.

In the 1960s, New Zealand led the world by banning radio and TV advertising of cigarettes, heeding the warnings of doctors and public health experts. The government then took further steps, eventually outlawing tobacco sponsorships, recognising that advertising was deceiving the public and encouraging more people to smoke.

Today, fossil fuel advertising is doing the same thing: deceiving the public and promoting products that are hazardous to our health and the future of our planet.
Fossil fuels are the new tobacco, and it’s time for our governments to act.

Global momentum is building.

Why not Aotearoa?

Around the world, governments are stepping up to restrict fossil fuel advertising. France, The Netherlands, and the UK have already banned ads for fossil fuels and other high-carbon products.

In Aotearoa, Greater Wellington Regional Council has banned advertising of environmentally harmful products, including fossil fuel-powered vehicles, on public transport.

In Australia, 16 councils and one Territory have signed on to restrictions on fossil fuel advertising.

Restricting fossil fuel sponsorships and marketing sends a bold, unmistakable message: Aotearoa’s future is renewable, he taiao ora mō ngā uri whakatipu.

Our politicians must act now to protect New Zealanders from vested interests that put profits ahead of climate and health.
