A major home of international law and The Netherland’s third largest city has just taken a world first step against climate pollution.
The Hague’s law will stop all adverting for fossil fuel products and highly polluting services such as air holidays, cruise holidays, petrol cars and gas suppliers.
When it comes into force on January 1 next year, all this advertising on public and private land will stop.
It outlaws fossil fuel products and services with a high carbon footprint, but it does not cover political advertising by the fossil fuel industry or adverts that promote a general brand.
It is the first time a city has banned high-carbon advertising through local legislation. The decision follows a call by the UN chief, António Guterres, earlier this year for governments and media to enact such bans, as they have done with tobacco.
